Learning to Live without Worry

Sunday, July 17, 2011

Scripture:  Matthew 6:25-34

False Narrative:  "Worrying Prevents Pain"

  • Worry harms our relationship with God, causes physical discomfort and destroys joy.
  • False narrative says, "If I had been more concerned about hat, I could have prevented it from happening."
  • Worry for many people is a way of trying to control the situation.

Jesus' Narrative:  Do Not Worry, Trust in God

  • Do not worry about your life... food... clothing...
  • God loves you more than the birds... the flowers
  • Worry keeps me focused on my own limited resources... Trust keeps my attention on God's abundant resources.
  • Worry happens when I'm on the throne of my life, when I live in the kingdom of ME. But I trust when God is on the throne of my life and I live in His Kingdom.
  • As long as we are worrying, we can't seek first the kingdom of God... As long as we seek first the kingdom of God, we can't worry.

Scripture:  Philippians 4:6-7

Two questions that we as followers of Jesus must answer:

1) Who am I?  "I am a child of God, one in whom Christ dwells..."

2) Where am I?  "I am living in the unshakable Kingdom of God... inside the kingdom of God, I am in no danger."
