Learning to Live without Lying

Sunday, June 12, 2011

Too many people live by a false narrative that "I need to lie to get by". Two main things drive us to lie: fear of what will happen if we tell the truth, and desire for personal gain if we lie.

In his book, "The Good and Beautiful Life", James Bryan Smith says that "we all lie more than we realize because we have a strong and intricate system of rationalization that justifies our deceptions.

Proverbs 12:22 tells us that "The LORD detests lying lips, but he delights in people who are trustworthy. Jesus said that all of our speech should be honest, genuine, true and trustworthy -- a yes means yes and a no means no.

Kingdom living means living with the truth and living in the truth.
As followers of Jesus, we are called to improve our speech:

Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.
